![]() In writing Days of Fire: Bush and Cheney in the White House, a history of the last administration told through the prism of the relationship between its two major protagonists, I found that one of the most daunting tasks was trying to reconcile varying versions of what happened when.ĭid CIA Director George Tenet give Condoleezza Rice, then Bush's national security adviser, a stark warning about a coming terrorist attack two months before Sept. In both big details and small, the major players often remember events quite differently, sometimes out of obvious self-serving motives but quite often just due to the natural reality of flawed human memories. The conflicting accounts underscore the challenge in reconstructing the story of any presidency. But Simpson, increasingly estranged from the family, says Liz is doing whatever it takes to win an election. Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, have weighed in to affirm that Liz has indeed always stood against same-sex marriage. Mary Cheney and her wife, Heather Poe, have implied Liz never used to be against it and in fact welcomed their marriage. While supportive of her lesbian sister when Mary thought about quitting the 2004 campaign because of Bush’s support for a ban on same-sex marriage, Liz Cheney, now running for Senate in Wyoming, says she opposes legal recognition of such unions. The disparate memories of that night take on a little more meaning these days as the Cheney clan and its friends fracture over gay rights. “You’re the vice president of the United States.” “Get up, bastard!” he remembers calling out. And then there is Alan Simpson, the former Wyoming senator and longtime Cheney friend, who believes he was the waker. Nick Brady, an old friend from the first Bush administration who was in the hotel suite that night, recalls being the one to interrupt Cheney’s repose. She writes that their mother, Lynne Cheney, was the one who stirred the future vice president. Mary Cheney, Liz’s sister, remembers it differently in her book, Now It’s My Turn. In his memoir, In My Time, Cheney recalls being roused with the news of Gore’s concession by his daughter, Liz Cheney.

It is hard to think of an American political figure for whom the past year brought stranger crosswinds: a tornado collision of chilling loss and rising moral leadership. Raskin with his family-including his son, Tommy, who was lost to suicide in December 2020. During the previous days, as ranks of pro-Trump protesters gathered in town, Raskin’s family had wondered aloud whether Congress would be safe, but he had shaken off the concern. Raskin introduced the two around, and Congressman Steny Hoyer, the Majority Leader, offered them the use of his office off the congressional chamber: a discreet space, he reasoned, that colleagues could visit to pay respects. The younger of his two remaining children, Tabitha, then 23, had decided to keep him company, along with her sister’s husband, Hank. There was the familiar hum of the Capitol, where, movingly, colleagues of all stripes consoled him. That morning, Raskin was able to step briefly outside grief, into work and a version of his old routine. “It is in the irreducible constitution of my personality to be an optimist, and I am radically optimistic about how the Constitution of the nation itself can uplift our social, political, and intellectual condition.”) Before coming to Congress, in 2017, Raskin had spent more than 25 years as a professor of constitutional law, and on arrival he quickly emerged as what Pelosi calls one of the House’s “leading constitutional experts.” (“I have been my whole life a constitutional optimist, in a double sense,” Raskin writes in Unthinkable. Given President Trump’s efforts to kick up dust around his loss, objections were anticipated, and the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, had asked Raskin to help lead the floor response-a role, and a click of republican machinery, that he relished. It was the day when the electoral votes of the 2020 presidential election would be counted. ![]() He spent a few days nearly catatonic, “rocking back and forth like a baby.” Then, on January 6, he rode down to the Capitol to try to work. ![]() “After searching frantically for my phone-which I had thrown high in the air when I came upon the scene-after dialing 911 and screaming after I tried to resuscitate him and get him to breathe by pressing repeatedly on his hard, beautiful chest…I floated through the house and under the grey winter sky, thinking perhaps I was gone forever, too,” Raskin writes in Unthinkable, his extraordinary new memoir of an extraordinary year. For Raskin and his wife and their two other children, this was the start of a nightmare. The previous Thursday, after preparing a breakfast smoothie, he had gone to the room where his 25-year-old son, Tommy, was staying while remotely attending Harvard Law School and had found him dead, a victim of suicide. Raskin, a Democrat who represents Maryland’s Eighth District, was entering his fifth year in Congress, having first been elected on the same night as Donald Trump. In the history of workweeks that start badly, few can compete with the one Representative Jamie Raskin began on January 6, 2021, his first full morning back in the Capitol since discovering the corpse of his son six days before. ![]() These shapes could be anything, from a rectangle to a square or an ellipse to a triangle. ![]() This costs around £125, which is very competitive for Wi-Fi 6, but we have seen pricing vary quite a lot online too, so it’s worth shopping around for the best deals before buying. The 2-pack mesh system that we review here includes two identical, compact little routers, which can link together to cover an area of up to 4,500 sq.ft, so that should be enough to cover most medium size homes. It might not be the fastest mesh system around, providing dual-band Wi-Fi 6 with a maximum speed of 1.8Gbps, but that should still be perfectly fine for streaming music and video, and a spot of casual gaming. Mesh systems and routers that use the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology (aka 802.11ax) are still fairly expensive, but D-Link’s Covr AX1800 is one of the more affordable Wi-Fi 6 options for people who have a new Mac, iPhone or iPad that uses Wi-Fi 6 (although, of course, new Macs and mobile devices will still work with older routers that use 802.11ac – aka Wi-Fi 5). We like the Linksys app too, which includes options such as the ability to create a schedule for your kids’ Internet access, so they don’t stay up all night watching TikTok videos. There’s also a USB 3.0 port that can be used to connect a hard drive or other USB storage device so that you can share photos, music and other files with other people on your home or office network. ![]() Each router supports tri-band Wi-Fi 6 (aka 802.11ax) with top speeds of 4.2Gbps, and has four Gigabit Ethernet ports – one for connecting to your existing broadband modem or router – with the remaining three available for devices such as a games console or Apple TV box that prefer a lag-free wired connection. That’s not cheap, of course, but the Velop does provide strong performance, and some useful extra features along with its wide-ranging Wi-Fi coverage. Like the original Velop – which is still available as a good, low-cost option for ye olde Wi-Fi 5 (aka 802.11ac) – the Velop AX4200 can be bought on its own for smaller homes, or as either a 1-pack, 2-pack or 3-pack kit in order to create a wide-ranging mesh network for larger homes.Ī single AX4200 can cover areas of up to 3000 sq.ft and costs around £229 – and, miraculously, it currently seems to be slightly cheaper on the Apple Store than on other online retailers – while a 2-pack (6000 sq.ft) costs £399 and a 3-pack (9000 sq.ft) weighs in at £495. That makes it a good choice for Mac users that want to really tighten up security for all the devices on their home network. I’m appalled by the fact that Linksys‘ web site uses configurate as a verb, and its model numbering system is pretty confusing too, but the Velop AX4200 provides strong Wi-Fi 6 performance and is also one of the few mesh systems that currently supports HomeKit. ![]() You can certainly leave it out if you’re trying to avoid sugar, but it does add to that Chick Fil A vibe. Powdered sugar isn’t an ingredient you see often in chicken nuggets, but Chick Fil A nuggets do have a hint of sweetness in the breading! We recreated that by adding in a bit of powdered sugar here. You’re still using much less oil than if you deep fried, plus you get to avoid the hassle of heating up a hot pan full of oil and cleaning up afterwards. You may use less oil, but your nuggets won’t be as crispy or look quite the same. We sprayed the chicken with oil spray until the breading looked moist both before cooking and halfway through cooking. That’s true in this recipe, but do be generous with the oil spray or your breading will come out dry. One of the benefits of using the air fryer is that you can use less oil when cooking. Halfway through cooking, shake the basket and spritz again with oil for maximum crispiness! Helpful Tip: Air Fryer for 10 minutes at 370 degrees F. ![]() Spritz the chicken liberally with oil spray. Then, you’ll toss each chunk in the egg mixture, then the bread crumb mixture, and put it on a prepared (sprayed) air fryer tray. The key to tasty nuggets is to season every part of it – so we’re imparting flavor via the marinade, the egg mixture, and the bread crumb mixture. In another bowl, mix the bread crumb mixture and season well. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix the egg, hot sauce, and milk. Up to 60 minutes is fine, but more than that isn’t necessary.
